Natural Hot Springs of Southern Turkey
In the South-West of Turkey rests a unique destination visited by travelers for thousands of years. The area is named Pamukkale, meaning “cotton castle” in Turkish, and is a series of naturally occurring hilltop terraces which are fed by underground spring water, heated by volcanic activity.
The terraces are encrusted in travertine, a sedimentary rock left by the flowing spring water. The water is heated by underground volcanic activity, and the water has long been believed to hold curative qualities. In 1986, this otherworldly locale was tabbed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
