Getting Prepared

Considerations/Physical Training:

This adventure is suitable for all physical abilities. Guests have the option of taking walks or 4x4 jeep tours and trips can be customized to suit your needs.

Gear Included:

Gear Included is not included in this tour.

Gear Details:

Rental gear is not required.

Visa Requirements:

Due to the fluid nature of visa requirements throughout Africa, we recommend that all of our guests check the current visa requirements with their local Tanzanian Embassy at least two months prior to their arrival. Visas can be obtained on arrival in both Tanzania and Kenya.

Weather:

The wet season lasts from April to May (long rains), and November (short rains). Layering of several thin articles of clothing is the most flexible way to adjust to the weather you will experience as you enjoy the vast landscapes, ranging from the bush of Selous Game Reserve to the beaches of Vamizi Island.

It is critical that you are prepared for the worst possible weather, and soggy or muddy conditions in the rain forest. The temperatures are hard to predict any time of year, but regardless of whether it is between June and August (the coldest time of year) or December and March (the warmest time of year), you’ll need to be prepared for “anything.”

What to Bring:

Bring neutral colored clothing, a lightweight raincoat, durable hiking boots, and sun protection. Guests should be prepared for all weather conditions and bring comfortable hiking clothes. Please bring all personal belongings with you. A complete packing list is available upon request.

Risks/Medical Considerations

Insurance Coverage::

We recommend that all guests take out comprehensive travel insurance. This should cover you in case of hospitalization as well as evacuation from Tanzania if the need arose. Flying Doctors medical evacuation is automatically covered; therefore, if you need to be evacuated as far as Nairobi hospital, then rest assured you are covered. However, this does not take the place of proper travel insurance and will not cover inpatient costs.

Medical/Evacuation Insurance::

You do not have to pay for the actual evacuation and we also provide AMREF Flying Doctors coverage so that we can guarantee covering our guests all the way to a hospital. You DO have to pay for hospital bills and any hotel accommodation that is not included in the standard program.

Evacuation Procedures::

We have distinct protocols to deal with emergencies. You must tell your guide immediately if you have any problems at all. Being honest is extremely important, so keep in mind that early reporting of any problems can really make a difference. If you do have any problems your experienced guides are there to monitor and make assessments to keep you within safe limits. They will make judgment calls as to how serious a given problem is and act accordingly. For serious emergencies you may even be evacuated as far as Nairobi Hospital but that scenario is extremely rare.

Hazards/Health Risks::

Please notify all guides of any medical conditions, dietary requirements, or special occasions before departing and provide a copy of your medical insurance. If you have severe allergies, heart or respiratory conditions, or any other physical limitation, please contact your physician before your journey.

Malaria: By far the largest health concern raised by travelers to Africa revolves around the issue of Malaria. For further information and reference please consult your physician and/or the Center for Disease Control at www.cdc.gov. Also wearing light colored long sleeved shirts and long trousers after dark will significantly reduce the remote possibility of contracting malaria. Likewise applying insect repellent to exposed areas will deter the mosquitoes further. Where available please make use of mosquito nets over your bed and the insect sprays left for your use. Please note however that we suggest you use the spray at least 20 minutes before retiring for the night. To reassure you further, we would like to point out that the mosquito is a fan of neither altitude nor lightly inhabited areas (we actively seek out such locations so as to minimize the slight chance of infection).

Medical Cover: Cover for medical evacuation is recommended in case of a medical emergency

Immunizations::

Travelers should arrange vaccinations as are normally recommended for the countries through which they intend to travel. Information as these matters and as to climate, clothing, baggage, gear, and similar matters is given in good faith but without the responsibility on the part of This Adventure Tour Supplier.
