Getting Prepared
Considerations/Physical Training:
This adventure is for 7th to 12th grade students ONLY. We strongly suggest that you arrive on your ARCC adventure in good physical condition. For a minimum of four weeks prior to your trip, you should run, swim, hike, or bike about thirty to forty-five minutes five days a week. Arriving in good physical condition will help students meet and enjoy the physical challenges and activities of the trip with enthusiasm and excitement. It will also allow you to focus on learning skills, gaining experience, and enjoying the natural beauty of the places you visit.

Gear Included is included in this tour.
Gear Details:
All equipment will be provided by This Adventure Tour Supplier.
Visa Requirements:
Visas: All information pertaining to visas will be provided upon enrollment in this adventure.
Passports: ARCC requires that all students traveling to Southern Europe have a valid passport that is valid until at least 6 months after your date of travel. If you do not already have a passport, you should apply for one as soon as you enroll in this adventure. Passport applications are available at the post office, and it normally takes six weeks to process an application. Be sure your passport is valid for one month after your date of re-entry to the U.S.
Weather:
While in Rome and along the Italian Coast, the weather will be hot and sunny with a cool breeze blowing off the Mediterranean. While trekking through the mountains, the weather will be similar to any high mountain terrain. Where the sun shines, the weather will be warm. In the afternoon, cloud cover will cause a drop in temperatures and may cause the occasional shower. At night, expect brisk temperatures and clear skies.
Upon enrollment, participants will receive a complete packing list with suggested clothing items based on the tour destinations and average weather during the trip time period.
What to Bring:
A complete packing list will be provided upon enrollment. Our equipment lists are fine-tuned each year, based on suggestions from students and leaders. Although the list may seem long, each item on the list is there for a reason. We ask that students follow the list as closely as possible when packing for their trips. If you have questions about specific items, or would like to know why a certain item is on the list, please call our office and we will be happy to answer any questions you have.

Eat & Sleep
Food:
Food is included in this tour.
Food Details:
We recognize that good food is an important factor in the overall success of an adventure. As a result, we spend a great deal of time on food selection and preparation to ensure a delicious and well-balanced menu. Each member of the group will be assigned to a rotating cooking group and will also be responsible for the selection, preparation, and clean up of the groups’ meal. This will give teens the opportunity to learn and practice your outdoor cooking skills.
The food we provide is selected with an emphasis on freshness and variety. Some examples of meals you will prepare are pasta dishes, campfire pizza, salads, chicken fajitas, French toast, omelets, and pancakes. Leaders at This Adventure Tour Supplier will always buy extra food to ensure that no one is hungry. At the end of most ARCC trips, we are often complimented on the quality, quantity, and variety of our meals. In some countries, like in Peru and Fiji, guests will dine on delicious local fare prepared by villagers in order to sample traditional cuisine. Guests may also dine in restaurants, European rifugios, and hostels during each adventure.
Dietary Restrictions: We can accommodate special diets or restrictions if we are notified in advance. Please keep in mind, however, that the selection for vegans may be very limited in places such as Ecuador, Peru, Fiji, and Costa Rica.
Accommodations:
Accommodations are included in this tour.
Accommodation Details:
While on this youth leadership adventure, students will sleep in either tents at campgrounds or in hostels while in cities. While sea kayaking, the group will be beach camping and while backpacking, our group will stay in various rifugios (alpine huts). These huts are used because, in most parts of the European backcountry, camping is not allowed. Rifugios are purposely built along the trails for travelers like us. These huts have beds, bathrooms, hot showers, and are generally full of mountain history. This student travel experience is a unique European adventure.
Risks/Medical Considerations
Insurance Coverage::
This Adventure Tour Supplier highly recommends that all guests purchase travel insurance to protect their investment. We recommend purchasing insurance through Travel Guard International. Travel Guard’s “Cruise, Tour, & Travel” plan is their most comprehensive policy and provides a myriad of coverage, including medical insurance, trip cancellation insurance and, if purchased within 2 weeks of receiving your final acceptance letter, it covers pre-existing medical conditions. While this is not the only policy available, it is the most common policy purchased by This Adventure Tour Supplier adventure travelers.
Medical/Evacuation Insurance::
The safety of our students is the primary concern of our staff and the outfitters we work with. As a result, This Adventure Tour Supplier has had an outstanding safety record, without compromising adventure and excitement. No student has ever suffered an injury requiring an overnight hospital stay. To ensure prompt care in the event of an emergency, This Adventure Tour Supplier has developed a safety and evacuation plan for every area in which we travel. Different parents have different safety concerns, so please do not hesitate to call our office with specific questions.
Hazards/Health Risks::
In the event that you do need to visit a clinic, they are readily available. You should expect to pay for clinic fees and/or prescriptions as necessary.
Immunizations::
Travelers should arrange vaccinations that are normally recommended for the countries through which they intend to travel. Information in these matters and others, such as climate, clothing, baggage, gear, and similar matters, is given in good faith, but without the responsibility on the part of This Adventure Tour Supplier.
About This Supplier
Supplier Description:
In 1983, This Adventure Tour Supplier developed a revolutionary student travel experience by bringing together a group of students for a journey that spanned multiple countries with the goal of teaching adventure travel skills to teens. What unfolded was unexpected and inspiring. We discovered through our many years of experience that when young adults are placed in a fun and encouraging environment, presented with realistic, nature-based challenges, and given responsibilities that benefit the team, they flourish and grow. The exhilaration of whitewater rafting through lush rainforest terrain or scuba diving to mesmerizing ocean depths, combined with helping children in orphanages, fosters courage, compassion, and a sense of community with people of diverse cultures.
At This Adventure Tour Supplier, we believe that leadership has many faces. As a company dedicated to rich educational programming, our specially crafted itineraries are designed to allow students to shine in multiple roles. Our exceptional trip leaders present opportunities that allow students to gradually assume leadership positions by planning the day’s meals, encouraging their peers, or motivating the group to continue with service work. Our goal is to cultivate extraordinary leaders, encourage peer support, and promote teamwork.
Renowned for our impeccable safety record, This Adventure Tour Supplier has well planned itineraries that leave little to chance. We offer multiple adventure trip options for 7th to 12th grade students, including Service, Language, Leadership, and Blue Water Adventures. For 5th to 7th grade, ARCC offers Discovery Adventures that are tailored to the needs of a younger group. The small group sizes of our adventure travel experiences ensure personalized attention for each student as well as unique cultural immersion opportunities throughout the journey. This small group focus also allows each journeyer to be an active participant in the decision-making process – one of the many ways in which ARCC advances leadership roles. In addition, students will always be paired with similarly aged students because we understand that the needs of a 7th grader are very different from that of a 12th grade student.
This Adventure Tour Supplier has created a worldwide community that mirrors the connections made while on a learning journey. This vast network allows students to meet other program participants online before their trip begins, to keep parents informed of their children’s activities while the adventure is unfolding, and to keep ARCC alumni in touch. Our staff regularly visits excursions to ensure a smooth and safe experience, and our expert trip leaders are thoroughly trained. We are happy to have so many members of the ARCC “family” keeping in touch through reunions and sharing their lifetime experiences with us as they transition into adulthood.
As the worldwide leader in teenage adventures, This Adventure Tour Supplier ensures an unforgettable journey for young adults looking for a unique study abroad adventure.
Supplier Policies
Payment Schedule and Terms:
Once you’ve picked an adventure, call our office and double-check that there is availability. If there is, we will take your credit card number for the $800 deposit. We will then hold the spot for you while you send in your application. You can find an application in the back of our catalog, as well as on this web site. You may also fill out the application and send it in with a check for $800 deposit. Upon receipt of your application and deposit, you will be sent an enrollment package, containing more detailed information about your specific adventure, as well as several forms for you to fill out and return to our office.
An $800 deposit should accompany your application. The balance of your tuition is due March 1st. If you sign up after March 1st, the full tuition is due.
Financial Aid: In past years we have given over $75,000 in financial aid to qualified students. Please contact us for more information on our financial aid program.
Cancellation Policy:
Terms and Conditions
Applications are processed on a first come, first served basis. Space is limited on each trip to approximately ten to eighteen participants. Because ARCC balances groups by age and gender, many trips fill up by February. We encourage you to submit your application as soon as possible to help ensure you get the adventure and dates that are right for you. The $800 deposit is applied towards the full tuition of the program. The balance is due upon acceptance of your application and must be submitted no later than March 1, 2009. Applications filed after March 1st must be accompanied by full payment. There is no final deadline for submitting applications (although many trips fill early). The deposit is fully refundable if the applicant is not accepted. All payments must be in U.S. dollars. All U.S. dollar drafts, checks and money orders forwarded from outside the United States and Canada must be drawn on, and payable by a U.S. bank.
Refund Policy
An applicant who withdraws in writing from his/her trip prior to March 1st forfeits $500 of the $800 deposit. If cancellation occurs after March 1st, the participant will forfeit all monies paid. Because of the severe financial consequences of cancellation after March 1st, we require that you purchase travel insurance which will reimburse you for cancellation under certain circumstances (e.g. medical reasons, family illness, etc.). Both parent/guardian and the participant should understand that ARCC has the right to terminate the participation of any member who refuses to abide by our rules and regulations. In this event, no refund will be granted. Should a participant withdraw voluntarily, for whatever reason, after the start of the program, no refund will be granted. If a trip is cancelled prior to its starting date, ARCC will refund any payment. If ARCC must terminate an ongoing trip, ARCC will refund the cost of the trip on a daily pro-rated basis. Our goal is to follow the itineraries described in this catalog. It is understood that poor weather, mechanical difficulties and unforeseen problems may cause alterations to the itinerary. If an area or activity must be cancelled for any reason, every attempt will be made to replace it with a similar one.
