The historic routes, constructed by military forced during World War I, have been restored and added to over the years. With the establishment of this extensive via ferrata network, adventurers can traverse Alps terrain that traditionally has been reserved for expert rock climbers. Travelers will also revel in the stunning views of lush alpine valleys and towering spires of this spectacular portion of the Italian Alps, a legendary training ground in the history of rock climbing.

Detailed Itinerary:

DAY 1: Arrival
Please Note: Variations in the itinerary are possible due to a variety of factors, such as weather conditions and fitness level of tour participants. The time references refer to actual walking and via ferrata times and do not include rest or lunch stops in rifugi (mountain huts).

Upon arrival in the Dolomites, guests will be met by a friendly representative from Guide Star Mountain for a briefing of their via ferrata getaway. Members of the Alps adventure tour will also attend an equipment check in preparation for the next day’s hiking excursion.

DAYS 2 – 5: Via Ferrata in the Dolomites
Journeyers will discuss the options for their 4-day via ferrata tour through the Dolomites with their experienced mountain guides (see list below for all available options – easy to strenuous).

Via Ferrata Averau (Easy)
Guests will be transferred to the Cinque Torre region to embark on an easy to moderate ascent of the Via Ferrata Averau. Your guides will instruct you in the basics of via ferrata climbing techniques as you begin your journey travelling over the near vertical walls of the spectacular Dolomite terrain. This ferrata route is ideal for beginners as your guide will give you lessons, including climbing technique, equipment use and important safety rules. By the conclusion of the first day, participants will feel ready to tackle the walls of the Dolomites with confidence.

Highlights of the route include stunning views of the Tofane Range as well as breathtaking panoramas of Cinque Torri, located below the impressive bulk of Averau. Adventurers who choose this route will also have the opportunity to travel over the historic training grounds for generations of rock climbers.

Via Ferrata Col dei Bos (Easy/Moderate)
Climbers will begin the hike to Via Ferrata col dei Bos above Col Gallina, located near the Falzarego Pass. This via ferrata route cannot be found on maps or in guidebooks; therefore, it provides a true adventure for the group. The route was one of the via ferrate (plural for “via ferrata”) constructed by the Italian military for training purposes. The first part of the journey is quite impressive as it features exposed and vertical rock walls of the Dolomite range. Upon reaching the top of the Col dei Bos, climbers will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain peaks.

Via Ferrata Piz da Lec (Moderate)
This route is an exciting option for those adventurers interested in exploring the high country of the Dolomites region of the Alps. While it is less popular than other via ferrata routes, it provides great views as it winds its way through the enchanting mountainsides before reaching a summit with spectacular panoramic views. The actual via ferrata is not very long but traverses over two steep sections with the help of iron ladders, making it more of a challenge than other routes.

Via Ferrata Giuseppe Olivieri (Moderate/Strenuous)
This ascent, which is almost exclusively equipped with cables, follows the steep southern ascent to Punta Anna, a large rocky outcrop that overlooks the Tofana di Mezzo. This option is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating and beautiful via ferrata routes in the enter Dolomites region. Climbers will enjoy its steep terrain, exposed rock walls, mesmerizing natural beauty, and the stunning view of the south face of the Tofana di Rozes. This via ferrata can also be extended by combining it with other nearby routes, including the ascent of the Tofana di Mezzo.

Via Ferrata Tridentina (Moderate/Strenuous)
This route is one of the most popular in the Dolomites. Climbers will be amazed by the natural beauty and exposure of the rock walls throughout the ascent to the Torre Exner. The route is easily accessible and cut be cut short in the case of bad weather. Other highlights include Rifugio Cavazza, the option of climbing Pissadu, and the route’s famous suspension bridge.

Via Ferrata Lipella (Moderate/Strenuous)
The “Lipella,” located at the Tofana di Rozes, is a spectacular via ferrata for the true mountaineer. With this option, climbers will embark on a historic journey into the heart of the Dolomites as some of the most memorable and tragic events of World War I occurred in this mountain terrain. This route is difficult due to its length and its path of stepped terrain and scree-covered ledges before finally reaching the 3,225-meter summit. While the route is difficult, the awe-inspiring views and historic significance make it worth the strenuous effort for mountaineers who are up to the challenge.
