Sacred Mountain of Indonesia 9-Day Hiking Tour

This creatively designed itinerary takes adventurers on a memorable trek to the roof of Lombok, one of the most scenic islands in Indonesia. Adventure travelers will enjoy the unique experience of trekking throughout Gunung Rinjani National Park with experienced guides and local porters. We are dedicated to working with local economies when running adventure tours. A portion of the proceeds from this trip in Southeast Asia will go towards purchasing jackets for the Rinjani Clothing Bank, an organization that supplies local porters with much needed warm clothing.

These same porters will help trekkers summit Mount Rinjani, a mountain famed for its isolation and eerie beauty. The peak is often shrouded in clouds and, although rarely seen from the lowlands, the views of Lombok and the surrounding islands (including Bali) are breathtaking. Rinjani trekking is one of Southeast Asia’s best-kept secrets and this adventure will showcase the awe-inspiring wonders of this majestic and spiritual mountain. With pristine lakes, lush rain forests, and opportunities to lounge in soothing hot springs, travelers can take advantage of a range of exciting experiences atop Mount Rinjani.

This 9-day hiking expedition (detailed itinerary below) takes journeyers through some of the lesser-known hiking trails of Lombok. There are three main routes that lead to the summit utilized by our company, one of which was just opened. The first route winds up the northern slope from Senaru, the second route treks up the eastern slope from Sembulan Lawang, and the third (and new) route, known as the Jati Track, climbs up the southern slope. Each track has its advantages, including lush rainforests and powerful waterfalls. The intricate series of trails, known as the Gunung Rinjani Circuit, is an amazingly beautiful, rugged and relatively untouched region that begs for exploration.

We specialize in providing the ultimate adventure travel experiences in Indonesia. For this reason, the Sacred Mountain summit is best taken at sunrise. Rising early in the morning, hikers will reach the summit in time to watch a magnificent Southeast Asian sunrise. Departures generally coincide with the moon cycle to give climbers enough light to reach the summit during the early morning hours. A brilliant coppery sunset will also be seen from the top of the crater rim, overlooking the crater lake of Segara Anak.

The breathtaking beauty of Lombok should be fully experienced by all journeyers; therefore, we are able to organize private tours for those who want to conquer the mountain with familiar faces around. We are also able to create flexible departure dates and custom itineraries for those whose schedule does not coincide with our standard departures.

Detailed Itinerary:

DAY 1
Arrive in Bali and find your way to the hotel. Enjoy Bali at your leisure.

DAY 2
After waking, guests should make their way to the airport for their transfer flight from Bali to Lombok. Upon arrival on the stunning island of Lombok, a friendly member of our staff will be there to greet guests and transfer them to their hotel. After settling into the Sheraton, located along Sengiggi Beach, expedition guides and guests will meet for a briefing about the climb up Mount Rinjani (this may occur the following morning depending on arrival times). Today will be spent wandering around town to pick up any last minute items and enjoying the laid back lifestyle of Indonesia.

DAY 3
Today, trekkers and guides will rise early for the beginning of a challenging, but rewarding hiking excursion. A car will pick us up at the hotel and transfer the group to Lawang where the trailhead and entrance into Gunung Rinjani National Park is located. From here, journeyers will begin their trekking adventure by hiking through savannah country and up the steep outer rim. Base Camp is located about 8 hours hiking from the starting point. After setting up a simple camp and enjoying dinner, adventure travelers will settle in for some needed sleep.

DAY 4
Trekkers will be woken at 2 a.m. to embark on a moonlight summit attempt. Guides will lead the group up the moonlit trail with the intention of reaching the summit for a spectacular sunrise. With majestic views of the crater lake, Bali and Sumbawa, this trek will provide the memory of a lifetime. After taking in this breathtaking sight, the expedition will hike down to the shore of Segara Anak, the lake that has developed in the crater of Mount Rinjani. Settling into the magnificent scenery, we will enjoy the rest of the afternoon here.

DAY 5
Today, our hiking expedition will take some time to engage the local flora and fauna. Part of the day will be spent relaxing in the nearby hot springs and exploring the steaming Milk Caves. After enjoying a satisfying lunch, hikers will lead the charge up the other side of the caldera to the Northern Rim Camp. Although the trek is taxing, the sunset here is incredible and worth the extra effort.

DAY 6
Taking our time and enjoying the beautiful day, the group will make its way down Mount Rinjani to Senaru by way of pristine rainforests. Keep an eye open for wildlife, as the lush trees and greenery are known to hide animals. Satisfied with the accomplishments of the last few days, we will immerse ourselves in the surrounding natural beauty and spend the night at a local guesthouse.

DAY 7
After breakfast, the hiking expedition will head down to the coast of Lombok. From here, a small boat will transport the group to Gili Tranwangan, an area known for its crystal blue waters and colorful coral reefs. Here, adventurers can go snorkeling in the ocean, eat a delicious lunch, and relax on the beach – a welcoming contrast to the last few days. Fully relaxed, we will head back to the hotel in Sengiggi.

DAY 8
In the morning, the group will say goodbye to Lombok Island and head back to Bali. After checking into the hotel here, guests can enjoy the day at their leisure, exploring local shops and beaches.
