DAY-TO-DAY ITINERARY

The following is an example itinerary for our 4-day Salmon River tour. We strive to provide our guests with a relaxed and flexible schedule; therefore, each trip varies slightly depending on the interests of the group.

Day Before
The trip begins in Lewiston, Idaho at the Sacajawea Inn, where you will spend the first night of the tour (accommodations provided). After arrival, we will have a pre-trip meeting at 7:00 p.m. to answer any additional questions and hand out river bags. The next morning we will enjoy breakfast at the hotel before leaving at 8:00 a.m. for the rafting launch site (approximately 2 hour drive). Any extra luggage as well as your car can be stored at the Sacajawea Inn.

Day 1
In the morning, we will eat breakfast at the hotel before heading to the launch site at Pine Bar or Hammer Creek. After jumping in the boats, we will soon enter the first canyon section of the Salmon River. After a fun-filled day of rafting, we will arrive at our first stunning beach sometime between 3 and 5 p.m. The HCR staff will have already prepared the tents and campsite; therefore, after arrival you can relax on the beach or take a short hike to explore this stunning wilderness. In the early evening, we will feast on hors d’oeuvres, followed by a delicious dinner. After the meal, you can enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep under the stars as there are no mosquitoes or other pesky insects here. Note: Lunch will be served riverside each day

Day 2
You will wake up to the aroma of fresh coffee and sizzling bacon. On the river, breakfast is typically served from 7:30 to 8:00 a.m. (since we are river time, however, there’s no need to ever check your watch!). After breakfast, we will jump in the rafts for another daylong rafting adventure. We will first run through Snow Hole Canyon, which is the site of one of the largest rapids on the Salmon River. At this time, we will have the opportunity to fish, swim or try one of the inflatable kayaks. Sometime before lunch we will explore the fascinating ruins of a Chinese mining camp. You will be amazed at the sight of the small rock house that once slept eight people. In the late afternoon we will arrive at our next campsite, where we will enjoy the “paddle boat waterside.” Kids and parents alike will enjoy sliding down the overturned boat into the river. The game box is also available for more fun on the beach. You will feel like the campsite is your favorite resort, complete with all of the amenities. In the evening, we will enjoy another incredible dinner, followed by a delicious Dutch oven dessert.

Day 3
Today’s rafting adventure is our longest day on the river. Today we will experience fun rapids that are great for both beginners and experienced kayakers. For lunch, we will stop at basalt rock columns that are perfect jumping platforms; ranging in height from 5 to 20 feet, the platforms are suitable for all participants. Our final stop is in Blue Canyon, one of the most remote and sheer canyons of the journey – a truly breathtaking campsite. The last night of the trip is always special; you can relax on the beach or create a skit to be performed at dinner. Whatever you decided, it’s sure to be a great time. After one last delicious meal on the river, you will have a final chance to sleep under the stars in this magical region.

Day 4
After breakfast, we will pack the boats and head down the last stretch of the Salmon River. During our rafting trip, we will come to the confluence of the Salmon and Snake Rivers of Hells Canyon. Interestingly, geologists say the Salmon River used to be larger than the Snake River. We will notice, however, that the Snake River is now two to four times larger as we pass by the towering cliffs of Hells Canyon. We will travel along the Snake River for approximately 20 miles before reaching the take-out point at Heller Bar. After a 45-minute drive, you will be returned to the civilization of Lewiston, Idaho. We will say our farewells and celebrate the conclusion of an unforgettable whitewater rafting adventure!
